How to Clear The NET Examination?

September 8th, 2007 · No Comments

i have been answering net exams since long time. i write almost 90-95 % of paper. still not cleared yet. please tell how i should study that i can clear the exams. what happens if answer exceeds the given number of words. please guide me in answering my exams

NET examination is difficult to clear. It is highly competitive and requires a large amount of reading and current knowledge in general as well as in the field of study.

Once I interviewed a person related to the UGC NET Examination and he said a percentage is worked out by UGC and only those who fall within that limit will be cleared.

Suppose 1 lakh people take the NET examination and 16% of them are cleared by the UGC, it means 84,000 people do not clear the exam. The cut off mark will differ each year as per the caliber of the test takers of that year.

I cleared NET and JRF at the first attempt. But that was in 1986 when NET was newly introduced. Over the years, the number of people taking the examination has increased and it is becoming tougher to clear NET.

The basic skills need to clear NET are common sense, current knowledge and clarity of expression. Along with these three C’s you need three M’s too - Memory, Management (time and space) and Mastery.

Consider the following tips:

Those who have taken the examination many times….

1. After each examination you should note down the questions you remember. This you should do immediately after the exam so as to record when things are fresh in your memory.

2. You should try to self-assess your performance. This does not mean just checking to see whether you wrote the right or wrong answer for that question. You need to recollect

a. what was asked and what was the expected answer
b. what was your answer

c. how well you answered

d. what are your strengths and weaknesses in terms of preparing yourself to answer similar questions, recollection of what you studied during the answering stage, time management and effort put in to stand out from the crowd.

In any essay examination, imagine you are the evaluator for that paper. Visualize yourself sitting at your table with 300 answer books to evaluate. You need to do it in an hour, otherwise you will miss your bus. On the way to work you had arguments with someone at home, the bus conductor and someone above you at work. You are opening Mr. X’s answer sheet (X is you the exam taker) as the two hundred and eighty eighth paper. You have read the same silly answer for the silliest question in the world 287 times already.

Have you visualized this?

How do you feel as the evaluator?

How do you feel as the exam taker?

What can you do as the exam taker to make an impression on such an evaluator? How can you stand out from the crowd?

What words, expressions, view points can you include in your answer that will immediately make such an impression on the evaluator that he decides to give you 8 out of 10, rather than 4 out of 10?
If you find answers to these questions, you can clear Paper III of NET.

Only those who clear Paper I and Paper II are considered for Paper III. So you need to prepare yourself for UGC NET Paper I. You need thorough knowledge as per UGC NET Syllabus for Paper II.

Those who are taking NET for the first time…

1. Download the UGC NET syllabus, do a Google Search and thoroughly study the latest developments in your field of study.
2. Read newspapers, magazines, etc. and be up-to-date on general topics as well as topics related to your field of study.

3. Learn from people who have taken the UGC NET examination many times. Find out the problems they faced and find solutions.

4. Write mock examination under time pressure and evaluate yourself (after stepping into the shoes of the evaluators described earlier in this post).

5. As soon as you finish the examination, recollect and write down as many questions as you remember.

6. Share your experience with others. For a start you can submit comments on this blog. You can write and send me a post. I will publish it in your name.
